Joining the Library

Students

Undergraduates and postgraduates are registered automatically with the Library when they matriculate each academic year.  A University ID card, which has an individual Library borrower number on the reverse, is given out upon matriculation.  Once in possession of a valid ID card, you are able to start borrowing Library material.

Individual annual registration is required at the smaller libraries within the University Library system, other than the Main Library.

Lost / damaged library cards and change of address (students)

  • If you have lost / damaged your card or changed your address, please update your details through the student portal.
  • Once you report a card lost / damaged on th student portal, a block is placed on your Library account within five minutes.  Please remember that it is vital that your report any loss or theft and that, until a report is made, any material borrowed with your ID card remains your responsiblility.
  • There is a £15 charge for a replacement card.  To ensure a fast and efficient process your can only pay for your replacement card online with a debit or credit card.

Staff

All categories of University of St Andrews staff are entitled to join the University Libraries and to borrow material.  Your University ID card, which you should receive soon after joining the University, has your Library borrower barcode on the reverse, and also acts as your Library borrower card.   You do not need to register separately at the Main Library.

Individual registration is required at the smaller libraries within the University Library system, other than the Main Library.

Lost / damaged library cards and change of address (staff)

Lost cards should be reported to IT Services, either by phone (ext.2532) or by email (idcards@st-andrews.ac.uk).

Admitted readers

Members of the public are welcome to use the University Library for reference purposes, apart from before and during examination times when all reader places are required by students and staff.

Lost cards and change of address should be reported either to reader Services (01334 462283) or by email (library@st-andrews.ac.uk).
