Athens account
* PLEASE NOTE: ATHENS ACCOUNTS WERE PHASED OUT AT THE END OF JULY 2011 *
Athens is a national authentication system which controls access to subscribed online databases, and was mainly used to provide off-campus access to e-resources subscribed to by the Library. It is no longer used at St Andrews and was phased out at the end of July 2011.
Like many other Universities, we are moving towards a single sign-on environment.
Databases which used ATHENS for off-campus access now use your University Account Username and Password (the same as you would use to access your University e-mail).
* you may continue to see ATHENS logins on many e-resources, but these links are no longer relevant to you, and you should ignore them. (Some Universities will continue to use ATHENS) *
PLEASE NOTE:
* you have continued access to all the same databases as before – you will simply log into them, using your University account details, in future. This is only a change in the off-campus access method used
* you will now access the Library's databases via:
- Online databases A-Z page
- the Quick Links to Databases menu on this page (this will list all the databases, soon)
- SAULCAT, the Library catalogue
- and the E-journals also link to individual e-journals (also listed in SAULCAT)
- or via SEEKER, the Library’s new search service, which allows you to do a single search across many of the Library's databases
* off-campus access method details are being altered on these pages, and in SAULCAT, as they happen, but if you’re not sure of the current off-campus access method to use, please check the A-Z Databases page
* in future, if you are off-campus, you will use the login link on the database you want to access:
- it should say something like: UK Federation WAYF / Institutional Login / Login via your Home Institution / Shibboleth login
- select 'University of St Andrews' from the drop-down list
- and enter your University account details to access the database
* the other databases which didn’t use ATHENS for off-campus access, will also use your University account details for access, in future. These changes will be phased in more gradually.
* there will be NO change with on-campus access – access should continue to be seamless, with no need for a username or password, on-campus, for most databases

On-campus access: If you are within the university network (including Residences) on-campus access to e-resources should be seamless.
