Main Library to open until 2am five nights a week
Monday 01 August 2011
We’re delighted to announce that, as of the new semester in September, the Main University Library will be extending its opening hours as follows:
Mondays-Thursdays: 08.00-02.00
Fridays: 08.00-00.00
Saturdays: 10.00-00.00
Sundays: 10.00-02.00
This represents an increase of 13 extra hours a week during semester. We’re also planning to improve our opening hours during both the summer and Easter vacations as well as looking seriously at further increases during exams. Speaking on behalf of the Library, Ewan McCubbin, Assistant Director (Public Services):
“Even though the Library’s opening hours have gradually increased over the last few years, we’ve recognised for some time now that we needed to do something to improve our late night hours in particular.
It’s not just the carpet that’s changing this summer but we’re also introducing dramatically improved heating, ventilation and lighting, new security access gates, more self-service technology, a café and extra staff. Without these investments from the Redevelopment Project, it was always going to be challenging to increase our opening hours further.
We understand that our users don’t just want the building fixed but they want to see improved access to the Library, its services and collections. With this change to the opening hours we believe we’re going some way to meet this demand and hope that our users like what we’ve done – and yes, it will be possible to get a coffee in the Library right up until closing time."
