A Touching tale from the Library

Monday 16 May 2011

iPod winner semester 2 2010/11

A St Andrews student has turned her own good fortune in winning an iPod Touch into a means of sending more books to schools in Africa.

Bethan Rowlands (2nd Year Social Anthropology student, pictured here with the Director of Library Services, John MacColl) won the prize by making a suggestion to the Library’s You said, we did feedback scheme. Along with many other students who have provided valuable comments this semester, she was entered in our prize draw – and won.

Bethan stressed the importance of talking to the Library:  “It’s so important for students to keep telling the Library how things are going – and especially so after the refurbishment.”

Rather than keep the iPod for herself, Bethan immediately thought to raffle off the sought-after gadget to raise money for her favourite charity, Read International. Bethan explained “Raffle tickets for the iPod will be 2 pounds each. It costs us 50p to send a book to Africa so one ticket can send 4 books there. The books go to schools that we work with in Tanzania and Uganda.”

She and the head of the Read Campus Book Campaign, Adrienne Luczkow, hope to raise £1000 and plan to sell tickets around campus this week - between exams and revision! However anyone can contribute by donating online at http://www.justgiving.com/readcampusbookdrivestandrews2010 . Why not click and support Bethan’s big-hearted gesture?
