Once power is restored, we shall reinstate the servers but it should be noted that this process is not instantaneous. We shall endeavour to make the recovery period as short as possible, but it is likely that services will be impacted until 1000. A fix for the problems with the electrical power supplies is quite urgent and a break in the power supply to the Purdie Annexe is unavoidable. The telephone system will operate on battery backup but this might not last for 8 hours (it depends on usage). For most users, access to the Internet should continue through our backup connection. Access to email will be available to most users but not all. The main reason for this power cut is to connect the building to a new UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) and to the generator that is being installed in the Butts Wynd Data Centre. Friday 29 January 2010
One of our main machine rooms in the Purdie Annexe will be without power for a short time on Friday morning, January 29th. This room houses the servers for a large number of our key servers and, as a result, most computing services will be affected. The power will be switched off at 8:00 a.m. and should be restored within an hour.
