St Andrews Remote Access is a service to allow computers outside the University campus access to the University computer network through a dial-up modem connection.

What do I need to use SARA?

In order to use SARA, you will need

  • a computer capable of connecting to the Internet using either:
    • a modem, up to V.92 standard, or
    • an ISDN terminal adapter;
  • a University computer account (University e-mail username and password).

Supported systems

IT Services can provide assistance setting up machines running recent Windows and MacOS systems. See below.

Other systems may be supported on a 'best efforts' basis.

Registering to use SARA

To register, you need to subscribe to the sara-users mailing list. Send an e-mail from your University e-mail account to majordomo@st-andrews.ac.uk with the message text consisting of the single line:

subscribe sara-users

Additional information on connecting to SARA will be sent in response to your subscription. The mailing list is also used very occasionally to inform users of changes to the service.

How do I configure my computer to use SARA?

On recent Windows and MacOS systems, the default settings for creating a new dial-up connection to the Internet will be adequate.

The telephone number for SARA is: 01334 438000

Configure TCP/IP to accept the IP address from the server and to use the default gateway on the remote network.
