Broadband

Please note that IT Services' user support for home broadband connections is limited to help with the use of the Cisco VPN client software, in conjunction with a BT (or Demon) ADSL modem-based broadband package. The client may work with other broadband providers, but our experience is limited and there may be problems when working with some broadband packages.

The following combination is known to work satisfactorily and is supported by IT Services:

  • ISP: Demon
  • Broadband Package: Home Office
  • ADSL router: Linksys/Cisco
  • VPN client:  Cisco VPN client v4.6/4.7
  • Phone line: approved by BT as appropriate for broadband at the speeds guaranteed by your ISP

The more your configuration diverges from this the more likely we are to have to hedge around our advice with ifs and buts.

If you want to use services available only within the University of St Andrews network (such as certain Library resources) then you will need to make a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection.

Broadband and firewall

While connected to the Internet via broadband your computer is liable to attack from hackers and viruses. It is therefore essential that you protect yourself with up-to-date anti-virus software, anti-spyware software and a personal firewall. You must review your PC security arrangements before you set up your broadband connection.
