Apple iPhone  - should you purchase one?

Due to high demand from suppliers IT Services has not yet been able procure and test the iPhone 5. However, having successfuly installed iOS6 on an Apple iPhone 4S we do not envisage any difficluties arising with the iPhone 5.

iOS6 - should you upgrade?

We have installed and tested iOS6 on an Apple iPhone 4S and we did not experienced any major issues when updating from iOS5 to iOS6.  N.B. As always, you must fully back up your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch before starting any upgrade.

We have had reports of users losing one or more of their apps during the upgrade process, but these can be retrieved by downloading them again from the Apple App Store.

There have also been reports of issues with installing the Eduroam profile on an iDevice running iOS6 at some Eduroam institutions.  However, these issues do not apply to current and new connections at the University of St Andrew because our Eduroam peofile stores your username when it installs on your iDevice.  Other institutions with less well developed Eduroam certificate installations have experienced log on difficulties.

Apple iPhone 5 news

The Apple iPhone 5, along with iOS6, will be released in the UK on 19 September 2012.  It is unlikely that the Telephone office will be able to supply the iPhone 5 on or near this date as our service providers are likely to fulfill orders from their general customers prior to offering the new phone to their Catalist customers.  More information will be made available as soon as we have it.

IT Services recommends you DO NOT purchase an Apple iPhone 5 at this time, especially if you wish to connect to University systems, such as UniMail and Eduroam.  We will test the iPhone 5 as soon as it becomse available to us, and we make recommendations thereafter.

Apple will release iOS6 for the iPad, iPad 2 and iPad 3rd Generation, the iPhone 5, 4S & 4, and the iPod Touch on 21 September 2012.  Until IT Services can test the new operating system we DO NOT recommend you download and install the update.

Apple iOS 5 update

Apple has released iOS 5 for the iPad, iPhone and some iPods.  IT Services has now tested iOS 5 and there appear to be no adverse affects with installing this major upgrade.  We can therefore recommend that you can safely install iOS 5 if you have a compatible Apple device.  Compatible devices include iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4, Apple iPad and iPad 2, iPod Touch.

N.B.  Updating to iOS 5 requires that you have iTunes 10.5 installed on your Mac or PC. If you do not have the latest version of iTunes you may not be prompted that iOS 5 is now available.

After the update you will be prompted to set a number of options:

  • Set up or log in to your Apple account with your Apple ID.

  • Set up iCloud.  iCloud is a new service offered by Apple, where you can store your documents, etc. on a remote server.  IT Services will not support iCloud services so, if you choose to set up this service, you will be responsible for its use and maintenance.  Please consider the legal implications of storing University data on an external system before using iCloud.
Recommendation: create an account but do NOT use it at this time

  • Send diagnostic information to Apple.
Recommendation:  do NOT enable this option.

  • You may also be prompted to enter a passcode (PIN).
Recommendation: Set this option. Use a four-digit number which you can remember, e.g. your office extension number.
