Apple iPhone 4S, 4, 3GS & 3G email account set up via IMAP
If you are unable or unwilling to use ActiveSync to connect to UniMail (push email and calendar synchronisation) you can configure your iPhone Mail application to sync to your University email account using a standard IMAP connection:
Press the Home button to access the Home screen. Then:
- Tap the Settings icon.
- Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
- Tap Add Account...
- Tap Other.
- Tap Add Mail Account
- Enter your full name and email address as you would like them to appear on outgoing messages, and enter your St Andrews email account password. You can use the Description field to label the account with a unique identifier, e.g., "Work" or "St Andrews account"
- Tap the Save button in the upper-right corner of the screen to move to the New Account dialog.
- IMAP should be selected by default. Scroll down and enter the following values for your Incoming Mail Server:
- Host Name: imap.st-andrews.ac.uk
- User Name: your St Andrews account username
- Password: This field is pre-populated with your St Andrews account password from step 5.
- Scroll down and enter the following values for your Outgoing Server:
- Host Name: mailhost.st-andrews.ac.uk
- User Name: your St Andrews account username
- Password: your St Andrews account password
- Tap the Next button in the upper-right corner of the screen. Mail will verify your account settings then ask you to switch Mail and Notes on or off. Ensure mail is switched on.
- Tap Save. You will be returned to the Mail, Contacts, Calendars configuration screen.
- Tap your new account.
- Scroll down and tap Advanced.
- Scroll down and verify the following Incoming Settings:
- Use SSL: ON
- Authentication: Password
- IMAP Path Prefix: leave blank
- Server Port: 993
You can also choose to store special folders on the IMAP server using the Mailbox Behaviors settings on this screen.
- Return to the configuration screen for your account by tapping the button in the upper-left corner of the screen. Scroll down to Outgoing Mail Server and tap SMTP.
- Tap the entry for mailhost and verify the following settings
- Use SSL: ON
- Server Port: 587
When finished, press the Home button and tap the Mail icon to test your settings. If you entered anything incorrectly you may receive a generic error message. Check your settings or try re-entering your password (the source of most errors).
