Apple iPhone 4S battery not retaining charge
A number of iPhone 4S users globally have reported that their phones are not retaining battery charge. Apple is aware of this issue and will release a software patch to fix the problem. However, Apple says this may not be available for a few weeks! If you are considering the purchase of an iPhone 4S you may wish to consider holding back until Apple releases their first updates to iOS5.
More news will be posted here as soon as Apple release a fix for the problem.

Apple iPhone 4S
The Apple iPhone 4S is now available for purchase via the University's Catalist mobile device agreement. More information, pricing, and ordering information are available from the Telephone Office:

The iPhone 4S is available in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB versions. All versions are functionally identical, except for their storage capacity. The iPhone 4 and 3GS remain available, but with 8GB capacity only.

Apple iOS 5 update
Apple has released iOS 5 for the iPad, iPhone and some iPods. IT Services has now tested iOS 5 and there appear to be no adverse affects with installing this major upgrade. We can therefore recommend that you can safely install iOS 5 if you have a compatible Apple device. Compatible devices include iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4, Apple iPad and iPad 2, iPod Touch.
N.B. Updating to iOS 5 requires that you have iTunes 10.5 installed on your Mac or PC. If you do not have the latest version of iTunes you may not be prompted that iOS 5 is now available.
After the update you will be prompted to set a number of options:
- Set up or log in to your Apple account with your Apple ID.
- Set up iCloud. iCloud is a new service offered by Apple, where you can store your documents, etc. on a remote server. IT Services will not support iCloud services so, if you choose to set up this service, you will be responsible for its use and maintenance. Please consider the legal implications of storing University data on an external system before using iCloud.
Recommendation: create an account but do NOT use it at this time - Send diagnostic information to Apple.
Recommendation: do NOT enable this option. - You may also be prompted to enter a passcode (PIN).
Recommendation: Set this option. Use a four-digit number which you can remember, e.g. your office extension number.

Apple iPhone 4S
Apple has released news about its latest Smartphone, the iPhone 4S. The iPhone 4S has a dual-core A5 processor, an improved camera and optics, with 8MB resolution and an f2.4 lens, and it will come with Apple's new operating system IOS 5. There will be 16GB, 32GB and 64GB versions of the iPhone 4S available. As yet prices via the University's Catalist scheme are not available.
The iPhone 4S is to be released for sale in the UK on Friday 14 October 2011. However, it will not be available for purchase via the University's Catalist scheme on this date. O2, Orange and Vodafone will have the new phone available only in shops at that time. Deliveries to the Univerity will be delayed for some time. More details will appear on this web page when the iPhone 4S is made available to us.
N.B. IT Services will not be able to support the iPhone 4S until we can verify that it is compatible with University systems. More news will be available after we can obtain a sample of the new device.

Apple IOS 5
Apple's IOS 5 will be released for download to compatible devices on Wednesday 12 October 2011.
