Information for new staff

If you use a computer in your work then you will have dealings with IT Services during the course of your career in St Andrews. These notes are written with new members of staff in mind, but many of the points will be of relevance to existing staff.

  • Please see also the online Quick guide for staff (PDF, 302 KB), new edition June 2011, which is also distributed to staff in the form of a handy A6 booklet.  It includes recent information on most of the topics listed below, including the recent changes in staff email and calendar facilities to use Unimail.

The three main types of computer used in St Andrews are Apple Macintoshes (Macs), IBM compatible PCs and Sun Microsystems Unix workstations (Suns). Most people use either a Mac or a PC, but all users need to have an "account" on the Suns, because e-mail and authentication services are provided on the Suns.

The IT Service Desk

The notes will contain links to the IT Services Information pages, and will also make frequent reference to the IT Service Desk. Please see the IT Service Desk Page for further details of location, opening hours and contact information.
