ResNet Overview

The residence network (ResNet) provides you with a direct connection to the University network and so to the Internet. This is a cabled ethernet network (10/100 Mbps). "Direct" means, among other things, that you plug your computer directly into a network socket rather than going through a telephone line.

Resnet works via a DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) Server. All computers requiring connection to this network must first be registered following instructions supplied here under the section entitled 'How to apply' or set out in the in-room documentation. Each student is entitled to connect just one computer in their study bedrooms. Once the computer has been registered online it should be restarted, it will then retrieve valid network addresses for connection to network services from the DHCP server. Students can then browse the network and use internet browsers to access websites and other resources without further authentication or software.

Please note that charges for ResNet are included in the hall of residence fees, no additional charges will be made for connection to this service, unless you misuse the network services that are being made available to you.

Please note that you will be unable to connect to an External Service Provider from your room through the phone line, you will also be unable to use VOIP phones such as Vonage and therefore it will not be possible to enable telephone services from these devices.

All study bedrooms in halls have a cabled network socket for access to ResNet. The University wireless service "Eduroam" is in the process of being rolled out to halls of residence and it is expected by the start of 2012 that all rooms will have the option of wireless connectivity, as well as the cabled network. Students are not permitted to connect their own wireless routers in their rooms, such devices can be detected on the network and ResNet service may be suspended.

When you connect your computer to the network, you are responsible for protecting it.
