ResNet Firewall Restrictions
The ResNet firewall permits the majority of network services deemed as essential to staff and students for academic study and research. Staff and students should find that the majority of network services for activities such as web, email, ftp, webct and text-based communication is available to them. Applications and network services which require non-standard ports are blocked by the current configuration of this firewall. Ports will not be enabled inbound to this network.
Services not currently available on ResNet include:
- Connection to majority of external gaming servers
- VOIP hardware phones (eg. Vonage)
- Connections to Virtual Private Networks elsewhere
- Applications requiring a large number of open TCP or UDP ports
- Video conferencing via AOL, MSN, Yahoo messenger
- Access to external email relays
If there is a specific service which you require and can not access because of limitation imposed by the ResNet firewall you may submit an online request to our support team for review. Please provide some academic basis or grounds for this request. We will only alter the current configuration of the firewall in exceptional circumstances where services are necessary for study and external host is trusted.
