ResNet Frequently asked Questions

How much does ResNet cost?

The cost of ResNet and the Residence PC classrooms is now included in the halls fees, there is therefore no additional charge made for the service once you arrive in St Andrews.

How fast is the network and what kind of cable will I need?

While a large number of rooms are now connected to 100Mbps switches, a number of rooms are still connected via 10Mbps switches. ResNet is an ethernet network, a standard ethernet cable (CAT5) with RJ45 connectors at either end should be used for connection to this network. In 2009/2010 a 3metre cable has been supplied by the central IT Services department to the Halls for each resident at no additional charge and will be available when the student arrives at their residence.

Where can I buy network cards and cables for my computer?

Cards and longer cables can be bought from the IT Helpdesk in the Main Univeristy Library on North Street. However from 2009/2010 a 3metre cable has been supplied by the central IT Services department to the Halls for each resident at no additional charge and will be available when the student arrives at their residence.

Can I use video conferencing software such as MSN Messenger, Netmeeting, iChat, AOL Messenger?

ResNet currently operates a fairly rigid firewall policy on the firewall surrounding the residence network. This does not normally permit services which require dynamic port assignment or services that require a range of ports to be open in order to establish a connection. While students may be able to use text chat with MSN, AOL, iChat etc, there are limitations in place which will restrict the use of video conferencing with hosts positioned outside the residence network. If you have specific questions regarding this please email resnet directly.

Does the University allow Peer-to-Peer filesharing?

The University does not permit peer-to-peer filesharing on the Residence Network. Students are asked to ensure that no peer-to-peer software is installed or enabled on their personal computers and sharing of folders and volumes for open access is strictly forbidden.

What is the policy on online gaming and can I connect to online gaming servers?

ResNet is primarily an academic network for academic use only. While students may be able to access certain online gaming sites and interact with them, we do not support such activities and will be unable to enable ports on the firewall to assist students connecting to gaming servers.

Is there a wireless network available in the halls?

We are currently in the process of expanding the University Wireless network to Halls of Residence. For more information on where to connect to the wireless network throughout the University, please see the IT Services wireless pages. Students should not connect their own wireless gateways in their bedrooms, such a practice is considered as providing of services and is in breach of your terms and conditions.

Is there a limit to how long I can use the internet for?

Students may stay connected to ResNet up to 24 hours per day if they wish, however students are advised to disconnect or turn off their machine when not requiring network services in order to safeguard the security of their own machines.

What are my responsibilities as a network user of this service?

You are responsible for all network activity originating from your computer. We can take no responsibility for loss or damage to your personal system or files as a result of connecting your computer to ResNet. All users should also be familiar with our Conditions of Use policy.

What is JANET?

JANET, the Joint Academic NETwork, is a British private, government funded computer network dedicated to education and research. All further and higher education organizations are connected to JANET, as are all the Research Councils and several metropolitan area networks in the UK
