WebMail - Possible problems & solutions

Cookies

Cookies are very small text files (usually around 50 to 150 bytes, and always less than 4kb) downloaded from a Web site by your browser.  Some reside in your computer's RAM memory and are deleted when you close your browser.  Others are saved to your hard drive when you close your browser.

Cookies are used by Web site owners to remember your preferences and by advertisers to track your online habits, and target ads according to your interests.  The use of the term "your" is a little misleading.  It's not really "your" visits that are recorded, but "someone's."  Cookies do not identify you, but they can keep track of your movements from page to page on a site.

In order that WebMail can function correctly you must ensure that cookies are enable in your web browser

Session expired error message

The most likely cause of this error is that your Web browser has been set not to accept cookies. To fix this:

In Netscape:

  • Select Edit => Preferences
  • Click Privacy & Security => Cookies:
  • Check Enable All Cookies
  • Click OK

In Internet Explorer:

  • Select Tools => Internet Options
  • Click Privacy
  • Move the slider down to Medium High or lower
  • Click OK

Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) and Netscape

In certain circumstances WebMail will not work in Microsoft Internet Explorer. If you get the session expired error message, and enabling cookies does not solve the problem, you may have to install or use another web browser package. This problem seems to be undocumented so we are unable to give you more details as to the cause.

If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer and you experience this please problem please download and install another web browser such as Netscape, Opera or Mozilla Firefox.

Disk Quotas

Disk quota allocation to St Andrews users is limited. It is important to manage your disk space on your home server properly. If you exceed your disk quota WebMail may not work correctly and you may not be able to carry out maintenance on your files.

If you go over your disk quota limit and find that you are unable to manage your files please contact the Service Desk. For more information see managing your messages.

INBOX

You must not leave your messages in your INBOX. If you do, and your INBOX becomes too large, you will cause WebMail to run slowly. Either delete messages once you have dealt with them or move them to another folder.

If your INBOX exceeds 1MB in size WebMail will be slow to respond and may stop working

If your INBOX exceeds 3MB in size WebMail will not work and your email may be archived without warning

If you find that you are unable to manage your files because your INBOX has become too large please contact the Service Desk.
