As developer for research computing projects, Swithun works closely with academics. The projects are quite varied, and involve processing textual and numeric data, images and metadata.
Swithun uses a number of programming languages daily, e.g. C, Java, Perl, PHP, Python, shell scripts. He is experienced in cross browser web development and has used many XML technologies, such as OWL, RDF, SVG, XForms, XSLT. He works with many different relational, XML and NoSQL/document databases. He uses many different metdata standards, such as DC, METS, MODS, PREMIS, TEI, VRA etc., and he works preferably with open source and non-proprietary software.

- University of St Andrews digital archive
Swithun holds degrees in Philosophy and Information Technology, from the University of St Andrews and Herriot Watt University respectively.

Areas of Birgit's expertise include the Digital Humanities, Digital Curation and Preservation, and Research Data Management.
Birgit is currently managing the Digital Archiving Project and the Research Data Management Project as well as the technical components of the following research projects: A Corpus of Scottish Medieval Parish Churches (AHRC, School of Art History), Late Antique Churches as evidence for the diachronic complexities of the Christianiszation of the Peloponnse (AHRC, School of Classics), and The Islamisation of Anatolia (ERC, School of History).
As Research Computing Team Leader Birgit also responsible for the development of the Research Computing Service.
Birgit is a PRINCE2 registered practitioner and holds the Certificate in Online Education and Training. She is also a member of the AHRC Peer Review College.
Birgit holds a Dr.phil. in British Cultural Studies from Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Germany.
