General information about IT Services
Underpinning the computer service is a high-speed network which reaches into all buildings and offices and includes a service to the study-bedrooms in halls of residence (ResNet). This network is supplemented by a wireless network that is generally available in libraries, teaching rooms and other public areas of the University. The network is itself connected to FaTMAN (the Fife and Tayside Metropolitan Area Network) and thence to the Internet generally.
The main central computing services provide file storage facilities, email and web services and access to a range of sophisticated software for data storage, analysis and display. Several computer classrooms and clusters are available throughout the University for direct access; some of these may be booked for undergraduate classes but are otherwise available for use by all members of the University. A range of software for word-processing, spreadsheet, database and statistical work is available on these systems and network printing facilities are provided (including colour and duplex printing). Access to most computer classrooms is available on a 24-hour basis and most University Schools have additional computer facilities for their own postgraduates to use.
IT Services provides a wide-ranging support service for users. A Helpdesk is available during the working day and may be contacted via email, telephone or personal visit. Problems may be solved on the spot or referred to an appropriate expert. Personal help is available on the formulation and solution of individual users' computer problems. IT Services has a dedicated advisor to support the Arts Faculty. Documentation (on-line and paper) is produced on common topics such as use of popular program packages and writing web pages. News and advice to users are also published in our monthly Newsletter and by on-line service status messages, or sometimes also email to users. Other computer services include: training and purchase of computer hardware, software and consumables, and support for users with special needs (including production of alternative formats for books and other teaching materials).
Our media services section provides and supports IT-based multimedia facilities in teaching rooms and also videoconferencing for live interaction via similar facilities elsewhere.
