MLitt student perspectives
Here are comments from just some of the MLitt class of 2010:
The ITIA MLitt programme provides a beneficial introduction to the history of theological interaction with artistic disciplines and an overview of different approaches taken to this same interaction today. I was attracted to the programme because it recognizes the vital bond between theological and artistic endeavours that persists in both western and non-western cultures, and is committed to exploring this bond in a manner that itself unites a spirit of creativity with proper academic integrity and rigour. The town of St Andrews is accommodating of study as its small size and picturesque setting provides a peaceful atmosphere for thought and contemplation; meanwhile, its location offers students easy access to the benefits of larger cities located nearby. Christina – Los Angeles, California, USA
When I heard about ITIA during my undergraduate studies in Tũbingen, it seemed to offer exactly what I
had been looking for. After half a year in St Andrews I can confidently say that my expectations have been more than met. I'm still astonished by the sheer variety of different areas that the modules cover. I enjoy the MLitt programme immensely, especially the discussions in and outside seminars, and I am looking forward to deepening some of the knowledge gained on the programme during three further years of doctoral study with ITIA. Christoph – Niederstotzingen, Germany
The ITIA MLitt is designed to expose students to the most significant writers and practitioners working at the intersection of theology and the arts. Our classroom discussions and essays have pushed us to engage critically with their work and to develop our own thinking about Christian aesthetics. With such a large sampling of artistic forms treated in the programme, we have all learned more about our own particular field of interest (mine is communications training and theatre) and gained an appreciation for others previously foreign or unfamiliar. As an ITIA student, my family and I are also a part of the larger St Mary's Divinity community. The support and welcome extended by those in this community helped make St Andrews quickly feel like home. St Andrews itself is a wonderful setting for both study and leisure. David – Charlotte, North Carolina, USA
What first attracted me to the ITIA MLitt was its unique interest in the relation
ships between imagination, literature and theology. ITIA brings together important subjects that cannot properly be understood without the other. Beyond the philosophy of ITIA are its people, however, an intimate and friendly community of accomplished scholars and eager learners who have stimulated my thinking and research in significant ways. It is a tremendous opportunity and blessing to study divinity at Scotland's oldest university, within the confines of the sixteenth-century buildings of St Mary's College, among such a company. Furthermore, the historic and charming town of St Andrews offers a picturesque and highly desirable setting for pursuing postgraduate studies, especially for a golfer! Travis, Littleton, Colorado, USA
The ITIA MLitt programme has shaped and sharpened my thinking about the arts, the dynamics of theology, and the experience of Christian faith. I am interested in how Christians (and non-Christians) artistically and artfully express their conviction-shaping stories, and how such truth-claims are made publicly accessible and publicly accountable, and in turn how these expressions are institutionalized in the creation of new publics, new media, and new public social norms. This programme has expanded the range of resources that I'll use in teaching, and has positioned me to continue research into the relationships between the arts, worldview, and public theology. Jim – Princeton, New Jersey, USA
