About

Cheryl Lawther is a Research Fellow on the project ‘Assessing support initiatives for victims of terrorism in the United Kingdom and Spain: Lessons for the European Context’. This project is funded by the European Commission, Directorate-General Justice, Freedom and Security. Dr Lawther joined the School of International Relations at St Andrews in January 2011. 

 

Before joining St Andrews, Dr Lawther completed her PhD in the School of Law, Queen’s University Belfast in November 2010. Entitled ‘Unpicking the Opposition to Truth Recovery: Unionism and the Contested Past’, the thesis explored and critically analysed unionists', loyalists' and representatives of the security forces' opposition to and reluctance to engage in the truth recovery debate in Northern Ireland. She also holds a BA Hons in Politics (First Class) and an MSSc in Criminology (Distinction) from Queen’s University Belfast.  

 

As an undergraduate, Cheryl was awarded the The Lemberger-Mettrick Prize – awarded to the student who is, in the opinion of the Board of Examiners, the best graduand in Politics and the David Mulholland Prize – awarded for the best dissertation by the School of Politics, International Studies and Philosophy, Queen's University Belfast. 

 

On the 5th July 2011 Dr Lawther was also awarded The Brian Williams Prize by the British Society of Criminology for her article “Securing the Past’: Policing and the Contest over Truth in Northern Ireland’, British Journal of Criminology, 50, 3: 455-473. This award is made in recognition of the best sole authored article by a 'new' scholar.

Research interests include: truth recovery, transitional justice, victimology, ex-combatants, Northern Ireland politics.
