Appeals

All students have the right to query the mark awarded to them in continuous assessment. The university encourages all such appeals to be resolved at School level. In the unlikely event of a continuing dispute the university's system involving the Dean of Arts may be invoked.

The School does provide for an informal re-marking process on items of continuous assessment. The procedure for requesting a re-assessment within the School is as follows:

  • The student should in the first instance consult the instructor who awarded the mark immediately upon the essay's return.
  • If any discrepancy or disagreement remains, the student should within five days of receiving a response from the instructor write to either the Year Coordinator (sub Honours) or the Director of Teaching, (Honours) as appropriate stating the grounds for their complaint.
  • Where the student can demonstrate a clear case of discrepancy between comments made by the marker and the academic content of the assessed work, the Year Coordinator or the Director of Teaching will decide whether there is a case for remarking.
  • If so the procedures used for double-marking exams will come into effect with the second marker seeking to reconcile their mark. If the difference is slight the assumption would normally be that the specialist marker's grade will prevail.
  • If the difference is considerable and the markers cannot agree then the Year Coordinator or Director of Teaching will refer the matter to a third marker or the external examiner.

The School's appeals policy with regard to other forms of assessment echoes theUniversity procedures, contained in the document at http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/students/rules/appeals/policy/.
