ESRC Studentships for the School of International Relations

Application deadline for ALL Post Graduate Applications is January 15th 2012 .
To be considered all applications MUST be complete, including two references, by January 27th.

The School of International Relations at the University of St Andrews is pleased to announce the availability of ESRC funded PhD studentships for the 2012-2013 academic year. These studentships are offered as part of the ESRC recognized Scottish Doctoral Training Centre (DTC).

The Scottish DTC in Politics and International Relations is governed by representatives from the Universities of Edinburgh, Glasgow and St Andrews. Although awards will be shared among the three universities, interested applicants should apply directly to the university where they believe their research interests are best represented in staff research activity. Applicants may not apply to more than one university at a time; doing so will invalidate their application. Awards will be determined by the governance committee representing the three universities.

Candidates may apply for two types of studentships:

  1. 1+3 awards: Students will be funded for a one year MRes in International Relations, with an emphasis on research methods, followed by three years of research on a topic matching research interests of staff in the School of IR.
  2. +3 awards: Students demonstrating sufficient training in research methods will be funded for three years of research on a topic matching research interests in the School of IR.

For information on the research expertise at the School of International Relations, see: http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/intrel/research/. For details on the research interests of staff members in the School of International Relations, see: http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/intrel/people/.

Studentships are available only to Home or EU students who meet residency requirements set out by the ESRC. Please consult the ESRC Postgraduate Funding Guide (Annex 1) for full details on residential eligibility requirements. In view of the limited number of awards and the very high standard of applications received, ESRC studentship funding is highly competitive.

In addition to the normal application materials required by the School of International Relations (see http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/intrel/prospectivestudents/postgraduate/application/, please note that complete PhD applications must be received by the School no later than 15 January 2012), applicants must also provide the following:

  1. A research proposal of 1000 words maximum (this can be the proposal submitted with the normal PhD application materials, or it can be a version revised after consultation with the potential supervisor)
  2. A supporting statement from the applicant’s potential supervisor
  3. A completed DTC Pathway Studentship coversheet (Word, 109 KB)   and a completed DTC Scotland Equal Opp form (Word, 243 KB)

If an applicant has already been offered a place as a research student in the School for the 2012-2013 academic year, but has not yet expressed a wish to be considered for this award, please contact Ms Mary Kettle, Postgraduate Secretary in the School of International Relations with an expression of interest and include additional materials as listed above (irpg@st-andrews.ac.uk).

Applications are due no later than 30 March 2012. Awards will be announced in June 2012. Applicants are strongly advised to contact potential supervisors and/or the Director of Postgraduate Studies about their suitability for the awards. Preliminary inquiries about the award scheme in the School of IR should be directed to Dr Anthony Lang (al51@st-andrews.ac.uk) or Dr Patrick Hayden (jph10@st-andrews.ac.uk).
