The School also welcomes applications for the following Research degrees:
- PhD (Doctorate), normally of 3 years duration leading to a thesis of not more than 80,000 words and an oral examination (Viva voce).
- Additionally the School of IR together with the School of Classics offer a specialized PhD program:
The James Wilson Doctoral Programme in Constitutional Studies
- Additionally the School of IR together with the School of Classics offer a specialized PhD program:
- M.Phil, normally of 2 years duration. The first year comprises the taught components of an M.Litt, and the second a dissertation of about 40,000 words followed by an oral examination.
Applicants for Research degrees should note that the School’s Postgraduate Committee takes account of the availability in St Andrews of a suitable supervisor for the chosen field of research. It is sometimes necessary to reject applicants solely because there is no suitable supervisor able to accept them that year.
Consequently, applicants cannot be admitted to the Research degree programme unless a suitable supervisor can be identified by the School’s Postgraduate Committee. The Committee must agree that the applicant’s research interests are viable and are a reasonable match with a prospective supervisor’s interests and who is willing to take primary responsibility for supervising the candidate. It is not the task of applicants to determine their prospective supervisor; they may express a preference in their application, but this will not be binding on the Committee.
