Biography
Meike has completed an MA in African History (Leiden University, Netherlands), for which she has conducted research in Zimbabwe on the politicisation and commercialisation of cultural heritage. She has also completed an MA (cum laude) in Conflict Studies and Human Rights (Centre for Conflict Studies, Utrecht University, Netherlands), for which she has conducted field research in the Democratic Republic of Congo on the transformation of military political movements into political parties during the post-war transition period.
She has worked in the field of international cooperation, democratisation in southern Africa (Swaziland), and has participated in election observation missions in South Africa (2004) and DR Congo (July 2006, October 2006). In 2006-2007 she has lived and worked in Kinshasa, DRC, working freelance as a researcher/analyst on transitional politics and security politics in the DRC. She has travelled extensively in eastern, central and southern Africa.
In January and February 2009, she worked as a visiting researcher at SPIRIT (Science Politique et Relations Internationales Territoire) at the Institut des Etudes Politiques, at the University of Bordeaux, France.
Meike has received funding for her PhD research from the Centre for Peace & Conflict Studies, University of St Andrews. In 2009 and 2010 she has done research in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This research was funded by the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds.
