British Society for Middle Eastern Studies

Research network: Domination, Expression and Liberation in the Middle East.
Co-ordinator: Dr Frederic Volpi, University of St Andrews.
This network is sponsored by the British Society for Middle East Studies and the British Academy as part of an effort to rethink the dominant approaches to studying the Middle East. It investigates the theme of domination, expression and liberation in the Middle East in the framework of globalization.
The network is the first component in a series of activities designed to reflect on how new research directions in the field of Middle East studies could develop in over the next few years.
It addresses in particular the political dimensions of the discourse on the Middle East and investigates how globalization is affecting identity, dominance and resistance in the region.
Based on their diverse research expertise, the network participants provide the building blocks required to begin to answer these issues, and propose an open-ended agenda for investigating the issues that are currently being neglected.
The aim of the network is to outline some of the main elements of global and regional politics which might become the foci of collective reflections on the future of both the region itself and the research that is deployed to explain and understand it.
