Living in the UK

Q: How much will it cost to live in the UK?

A:  The UK Council for International Student Affairs has compiled some useful leaflets on all aspects of studying in the UK including living costs.  Please see the UKCISA website for more information.

Q: As an international student, can I drive in the UK?

A: If you have a current full driving licence in your home country you are permitted to drive for up to one year after you first entered the UK. After this date the rules depend on your country of origin.  You will however need to be fully aware of the legal requirements of driving any motor vehicle. Please see Driving in the United Kingdom: a guide for international students.

Q: Can I open a bank account before arriving in the UK?

A: No, you need to physically be in the UK before you can open an account. See Opening a bank account - international and EU students.

Q: I need to see a doctor; how do I register?

A: You will be registered with a doctor as long as you are a registered student.  To make an appointment call the Health Centre.

Q: If I use medical services in the UK do I have to pay?

A: No. Consultations, routine and emergency treatment are provided free of charge.  If you are given a prescription for medication to be filled out at a  Pharmacy, this is also free in Scotland.
