Interhall Energy Competition
What is it and why do it?
For the past 5 years, the students and staff of St Andrews have been doing their part to reduce the energy consumed in student accommodation via the Interhall Energy Competition. Each year incoming students recognize the commitment that the University of St Andrews has to responding to climate change by taking simple measures to ensure that no energy is wasted.
This gives every student and staff member the chance to work together and make their contribution to the energy needs of the University community and take an active role in sharing the values of the University. The competition also presents a great chance to learn energy saving behaviours that will save you wasting money on energy bills in the future. In the past, halls have reduced their energy by up to 33% by adopting energy efficient behaviours. And there is still room for improvement.
This year with the help of all staff, students, Environment Reps and Transition University of St Andrews there is a great opportunity to make the biggest energy savings to date! Visit Transition's website or get to touch with your Environment Rep to find out how you can reduce your energy:
www.st-andrews.ac.uk/transition.
The University and the student body is already doing a lot to reduce our impact on the environment (check out one of the projects that the Environment Team at Estates is working on DRA Solar System) so the Interhall Competition is a great way for you to get involved and play your part as well.
If you have any suggestions for how the Interhall Energy Competition can be improved, have any more energy saving tips or simply want to get in touch please email environment@st-andrews.ac.uk
The competition:
Student accommodation has been split into thirteen areas to pit their environmental wits against each other. We will take energy readings each month. The accommodation with the greatest reduction or smallest increase from the previous month will be crowned winners and super champions of that month starting in October.
Energy use is a massive part of the solution to climate change but there are a lot more benefits that being energy efficient can being you. Studnets can save money, keep warm, win prizes and gain skills that you can add to your CV by getting involved in the energy work that Transition will be doing over the year.
Winners of the competition will be thanked for helping St Andres reduce its energy usage. The Hall Committee of the winner hall each month will receive £100 do with what they want in their hall (within reason!).
