Bourdieu and Multiple Correspondence Analysis
Bourdieu and Multiple Correspondence Analysis
This strand of the conference focuses on applications of the work of the French social theorist Pierre Bourdieu. Bourdieu is now used extensively in such research fields as Education/ Culture; Language, Politics and Power/Economics; Art and Aesthetics. However, ethnographic and biographical methodologies predominate. This strand seeks to go beyond routine methodological approaches.
The main focus will be Geometric Data Analysis, including Multiple Correspondence Analysis, and a number of specific studies employing these methods will be presented.
However, we are aiming to juxtapose these with examples using a range of graphic approaches in presenting data and analyses. The aim is to see the strengths and weaknesses of these different methods, to compare them, and see how they complement.
The conference represents a critical stage in our use of Bourdieu’s ideas and methods. At the end, we hope significantly to have taken forward our practical understanding of methods and techniques available to us in conducting research from a Bourdieusian perspective. And, to have developed knowledge and skills to apply to our own projects.
The Symposium will have a 4-hour slot each day dedicated to the presentation of papers, and ample time will be given to considering each one in detail. The Symposium will begin with discussion of Bourdieu’s theory of practice, what he set out to do, and the range of graphic representation used in his data analyses. We will include papers on Multiple Correspondence Analysis, both in studies which replicate areas of Bourdieu’s work and offer extensions and refinements of it.
Call for Symposium Papers - now extended until Monday 6th June, 2011
Prior to the conference (Monday 11th July 2011) the Symposium also offers a one-day Introductory Workshop on Bourdieu and Geometric Analysis Workshop. This workshop is aimed at those with less experience of it and costs £50. It will work with actual data and computer software available for MCA.It is presented by Michael Grenfell, Frédéric Lebaron and Brigitte Le Roux. Details here
The Bourdieu and Geometric Analysis Workshop is now open for booking as a separate event. Click here.
