HERA and the Recruitment Process

When recruiting for a new or replacement post it is necessary to ensure that the grade of the post has been confirmed by HERA analysis.  Depending on how the post is funded and whether it is a new or replacement post, the following procedures should be followed:

Full academic staff

Adverts/further particulars for Lecturers, Senior Lecturers, Readers and Professors do not generally need to go through a separate role analysis prior to advertising.  Recruitment to such posts, however, will require approval by the Master.

All other teaching and research posts with a potential grade of 5-9 will be subject to role analysis to confirm the grade.  If in doubt as to whether an academic post requires to be role analysed, please contact framework@st-andrews.ac.uk

Externally funded new and replacement posts

Heads of Schools/Units who wish to advertise externally funded posts should send their advert and further particulars to the recruitment office margaret.lindsay@st-andrews.ac.uk.  The role will then be role analysed and the grade confirmed prior to advertising.

If the role is a straight replacement for an existing role holder whose role has already been through the HERA process then employers should indicate this in their correspondence with the recruitment office.  The HERA team will still need to review the further particulars to ensure that there have been no changes to the post which could impact on grading and that the post has been pitched at the right level.

Internally funded new posts

All internally funded new posts require approval from the Workforce Planning Group prior to advertising.  Heads of Schools/Units are required to submit an advert, further particulars and organisation chart along with their application to the group, email workforce@st-andrews.ac.uk  and these will be put through the HERA process to ascertain the correct grade.

Internally funded replacement posts

All internally funded replacement posts require approval from the Workforce Planning Group following the process as detailed above.  Heads of Schools/Units should state on the form whether or not the role is a straight replacement for an existing role holder or whether there have been alterations to the duties/responsibilities of the post.

If you are unsure how to proceed in having a new or replacement role graded, please contact workforce@st-andrews.ac.uk for further guidance.
