About the Athena SWAN Charter award:
Launched in June 2005, the scheme recognises excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) employment in higher education. Institutions and STEM subject schools which are committed to the advancement and promotion of the careers of women in STEM in higher education and research are encouraged to apply for the 3 levels of the award (Bronze, Silver and Gold).
Research Councils UK (RCUK) through its ‘Equality Statement’ (17 Jan 2013), highlighted Athena SWAN as a method to assist in E&D cultural change management, and recommended institutions to achieve the award.
