3.1 Inclusive Arrangements

Recommendation v's Advertising:
The practice of recruitment on the basis of recommendations made by existing staff, rather than through advertising, could lead to discrimination depending on the situation.

Example:

Where the workforce is drawn largely from one sex/gender or racial group (if unbalance as compared with the local working age area population, such as in Fife and Tayside), this practice could lead to continued exclusion of the opposite sex or other minority groups. Advertising the role more widely could result in a more gender balanced and diverse pool.

Internally:
Before deciding only to advertise a vacancy internally, consider whether there is any good reason for doing so.
If the workforce is made up of people with a particular Equality Strands, advertising internally will not help diversify the workforce.

Actions if internally advertising:

Action 1: Provide equal opportunity for everyone within the University to apply

Action 2: Ensure that staff on maternity or paternity leave are informed

Action 3: Ensure that staff on long-term sick leave are informed

Action 4: Ensure that staff working on "term-time only" work patters are informed
