Q. I am a student do I have to pay tax if I carry out any work for the University?
A.Yes, if you do any work during term time you must pay tax. The only time students are exempt from paying tax is vacation time.

Q. What does a tax code of 747L mean?
A. It means that you can earn up to £7479 tax free in any tax year.

Q. What date do staff get paid every month?
A. Pay day for the University is the second last working day of the month.

Q. How do I go about claiming my tax back if I am not working any more hours at the University this Tax Year?
A. Send a letter to the Tax Office explaining you think you may have paid too much tax and enclose a copy of your P45 or your P60.

Q. How do I work out what my annual salary is?
A. Multiply your basic salary by 12

Q. What forms do I have to complete to ensure I am on the correct tax code and where do I get them?
A. You are required to complete a P46, which is available from the Salaries Office.

Q. How much do I pay if I join the Pension Scheme?
A.If you are a member of the Final Salary section of USS you would pay 7.5%, or 6.5% if you are a member of the Career Revalued section. If you are a member of the University of St. Andrews Superannuation and Life Assurance Scheme, you would pay 7.77%

Q. How much will my State Pension be?
A. You can get a Retirement Pension forecast by completing form BR19 available from the Benefits Agency. If you are within 4 months of State Retirement Pension age you should have received a Retirement Pension Claim pack. If not please contact your Social Security office straight away.

Q. I have a tax code of BR what does this mean?
A. This means that you have to pay tax on all your earnings and are not receiving a tax free allowance. To receive your allowance you must complete a P46 which is available from the Salaries office.

Q. Where do I find my payroll/ ID number?
A. You can find this on your staff identification card under your Surname. Disregard the digits 6900.
