Postgraduate Study in the School of History
The School of History is home to a large and diverse community of over 100 postgraduate students pursuing either one of a number of taught programmes on offer, or engaging in original research for an advanced postgraduate degree.
As one of the country's leading centres for historical research the School of History provides an active and cohesive academic setting for postgraduate study. The School brings together over fifty members of staff - several of them leading, internationally recognised authorities - working in many different fields of History and is also home to a number of institutes, research centres, projects and research groups.

Research Degrees

More than 50 PhD theses are currently being undertaken by postgraduates students in the School of History attesting to the School’s commitment to fostering innovative research and early careers. Click here for a list of recent theses completed in the School (some can be read online). Many of these postgraduate students have been attracted to St Andrews by their wish to be supervised by a certain member of staff, often a leading contributor to his or her field. The research interests of members of staff range from 6th century Scotland to America in the 1970s and with over forty active researchers the number of areas of expertise is very large. In addition to the academic relationship which doctoral students will develop individually with their supervisor, these students are also part of a large and active research community. Formally this community includes the Institutes and Centres within the School and the regular seminars which run throughout the semesters. A more informal postgraduate community is maintained through dedicated communal workspace, reading parties and a range of postgraduate social events. Our students have the opportunity to study abroad as part of their PhDs, either as part of formal co-tutelle (joint supervision) arrangements with another university, or through the Erasmus exchange programme. This degree will provide students with advanced training in the history of the early modern European and Atlantic worlds, including the Ottoman Empire. It will introduce students to a range of approaches to early modern history, and will give students unusually wide opportunities to undertake advanced study of the period. It will also provide both broad and deep preparation for subsequent doctoral research for students wishing to pursue further study. The Institute of Iranian Studies serves as a focal point for research and discussions of all aspects of Iranian Studies through the hosting of conferences, seminars and workshops, with the aim of drawing together academic and policy expertise. It offers a taught postgraduate programme in Iranian Studies which is the first taught postgraduate programme of its kind in the United Kingdom, and scholars here benefit from burgeoning resources as the cataloguing of some 12,000 Persian books and 800 films donated to the University Library continues. | |
