PhD Scholarships
(Updated December 2012)
The School is pleased to be able offer a range of funding opportunities for students beginning a full-time PhD in September 2013. We welcome applications from all eligible candidates. Scholarships will be distributed on a competitive basis, and the only criterion will be academic quality.
Available Scholarships
AHRC Studentships
The School has 3 AHRC studentships to distribute to incoming students. UK applicants awarded one of these scholarships will receive fees plus a maintenance allowance (currently in the region of £13,500 per annum) for 3 years. EU students are normally entitled to fees only unless they meet specific residency criteria, and non-EU applicants are normally ineligible (again, depending on residency criteria). For further details on eligibility, and definitions of residence, see the AHRC’s regulations: http://www.ahrc.ac.uk/SiteCollectionDocuments/Student-Funding-Guide.pdf
600th Anniversary PhD Scholarships
To celebrate our 600th anniversary, the University has provided considerable additional funding to support incoming PhD students. ALL students (home, EU, non-EU) will be eligible for these awards. The School will offer these Scholarships at two levels (we expect to distribute several at each level):
School of History Scholarships
In addition, the School will distribute 2 further PhD scholarships, at £4,000 per annum for 3 years. These scholarships will cover the fees of home/EU applicants, and subsidise those of and non-EU applicants.
Dr Jamie Stuart Cameron Award
Applicants intending to study topics in Medieval Scottish History c.1100-c.1550 will automatically be considered for the Dr Jamie Stuart Cameron Award. This award provides £1,000 in additional research expenses.
Studentships associated with PIMIC-ITN: Power and Institutions in Medieval Islam and Christendom. An integrated training network in research and diffusion for comparative history. The deadline is 24 March 2013. [click here]
Admission applications
NB YOU MUST HAVE APPLIED SUCCESSFULLY FOR ADMISSION TO THE UNIVERSITY BEFORE APPLYING FOR THESE SCHOLARSHIPS.
There is a separate application procedure for admission: Postgraduate Application and Admission
Prospective students are encouraged to contact relevant members of staff to discuss their proposed research project and ensure supervision is available before making a formal application. Please make your applications in good time.

Scholarship applications
Note that the application procedure for all the awards is the same: all use the same application form, and we have a single deadline. You need only make one application, which will be considered in a single competition for all available scholarships. If you are successful, we will automatically offer you the most valuable scholarship for which you are eligible, subject to ranking and availability. The PIMIC-ITN training network scholarships are an exception – please click the link above for details about how to apply for these.
Students intending to study jointly at St Andrews and another institution as part of a formal co-tutelle arrangement beginning in autumn 2013 may also apply for the scholarships. Such students will be considered for scholarships funded pro rata
Those who win scholarships normally have a First Class undergraduate degree (or equivalent), and a Distinction at Masters level (or, if your Masters is ongoing, evidence of Distinction-level performance).
For scholarship applications, the following deadlines apply:

8 February 2013
Deadline for internal (St Andrews) candidates to notify the School that they will be making an application. This may be done by e-mail to pghist@st-andrews.ac.uk

Please tell us the name of your prospective supervisor.
2. Formal application

This is the deadline for all scholarship applications, which should be submitted by email to pghist@st-andrews.ac.uk
*NB the deadline of 18th January for the 600th Anniversary Scholarships advertised elsewhere on the University website does not apply to History applicants.*
Please supply all relevant transcripts with your application, and ensure that 2 referees write to us separately by the deadline. Remember that your application for admission to the University is completely separate from your scholarship application.
