Since academic year 2009-10, responsibility for the distribution of AHRC PhD studentships has rested with individual universities. The School of History has been successful in its bid to secure one of the prestigious AHRC Block Grant Awards for Doctoral Scholarships. The award means that the School of History has secured 17 AHRC Doctoral Studentships for distribution over a 5- year period. In 2012-13, 4 such studentships are available. Successful UK applicants will receive fees plus a maintenance allowance. EU students are entitled to apply for fees only unless they have been resident in the UK for 3 years prior to beginning the PhD, in which case they are entitled to the maintenance allowance as well.
Non-EU applicants are normally ineligible for the AHRC studentships, except when they meet specific residency criteria.
For further details on eligibility criteria, and definitions of residence, see the AHRC’s regulations at pp. 64-8 of this document.
In addition, the School will distribute 4 further PhD scholarships, 2 at £4,000 per annum and 2 (The Holbeck Charitable Trust History Scholarships) at £8,000 per annum for three years to assist with the costs of tuition fees and living expenses.
The competition for School scholarships is open to UK, EU and non-EU applicants. Applicants intending to study topics in Medieval Scottish History c.1100-c.1550 will also be eligible for the Dr Jamie Stuart Cameron Award.
Note that the application procedure for all these awards is the same, and all use the same application form. You need only make one application, which will be considered for all the above awards in a single competition.
NB YOU MUST HAVE APPLIED SUCCESSFULLY FOR ADMISSION TO THE UNIVERSITY BEFORE APPLYING FOR THESE STUDENTSHIPS. There is a separate application procedure for admission (see the bottom of this page for the link).
It is expected that students applying for these scholarships will begin PhD study in September 2012. Applicants may ask to take up a *School scholarship* before this date, but no earlier than April.
