Teaching and Research Interests

I am interested in modern European history, especially in cultural and transnational history. My doctoral thesis on French and German perceptions of the Franco-Prussian War 1870/71 focused on the implementation of the law of nations and its characteristics in times of war; it included research in the fields of military history and the history of the media. I am currently working on national and “European” political cultures, having published on the experience of disempowered statesmen and monarchs and their “acting behind the scenes” on the political stage in Nineteenth-CenturyEurope. I am now joining the AHRC-funded research project “Heirs to the throne in the Constitutional Monarchies of Nineteenth-Century Europe (1815-1914)”.
