Main research interests concentrate on the relationship between crown and nobility in the fifteenth century and the chronicle sources of the period. Currently working on a major study of James II of Scotland as an updated and fully revised edition of the volume from the Stewart Dynasty in Scotland series (John Donald). Main teaching interests cover developments in the government and social structures of mediaeval Scotland, diplomatic links with other European states and the analysis of castles in the context of the exercise of lordship in the mediaeval period.
Member of the St.Andrews Institute of Scottish Historical Research and the Institute of Mediaeval Studies at the University of St.Andrews.
