Thesis title: “A partnership for war: England and Austria in the War of the Spanish Succession” (supervised by Dr. Guy Rowlands)

I am interested in Military History and Diplomatic History, particularly during the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries. My research focuses on the military alliance between England and Austria during the War of the Spanish Succession. Many of the alliances during the war have been explored, but this one has been largely overlooked for the duration of the war. I will be looking into how the alliance operated and functioned. This will include collaboration between the two sides on strategy, joint operations, political tensions, and religious tensions. Unlike the previous Nine Years War, the armies of England and Austria were no longer operating in distinct and separate theaters from each other. The armies of the nations operated together in Flanders, the Danube, and in the Iberian Peninsula. Moreover, religious issues and tensions were still relevant. They created a point of friction between the two nations as my Masters’ research into their alliance during the Nine Years War showed. My research will primarily be from the English side as I will spend most of my time in archives around England. However, I will also spend time researching in the archives in Vienna.
