Course Structure for Taught Programmes (Postgraduate Diploma, MLitt and MPhil)

In order to complete the Postgraduate Diploma or the taught part of an MLitt or MPhil programme students will have to gain a minimum of 120 credits over two semesters from a combination of approved courses. Information on the programme pathways for each individual programme can be obtained from the University Postgraduate Catalogue or from course directors. Candidates whose average mark for the taught component of the course is 13.5 or higher on the School Marking Scale will be allowed to proceed to the dissertation stage of the degree programme.

Candidates whose average mark in the taught component is lower than 13.5 but higher than 7.0 will be offered the Graduate Diploma and will not be allowed to proceed to the dissertation stage of the degree programme.

Taught Postgraduate Progression

From 2011/12, the threshold for progression to the dissertation/project of a Taught Postgraduate Masters degree is as follows:-

13.5 - 20.0

Right of Progression to MLitt / MSc / MRes / MPhil if available

7.0 – 13.4

Postgraduate Diploma

Students who progress to the dissertation still need to achieve a grade of 13.5 or better for their dissertation in order to be awarded the Masters degree.

The overall average mark for the MLitt programme is calculated according to this formula:

(coursework average x 2) + dissertation mark
3

In order to obtain an overall Distinction in the MLitt programme, a candidate must have achieved Distinction grades in both the taught and dissertation components of the programme.

The overall classification of MPhil degrees (Distinction/Pass/Fail) wholly depends on the mark awarded for the dissertation. However, in order to be allowed to proceed to the dissertation, candidates in MPhil programmes are required to have achieved an average mark of no less than 13.5 in the taught component of the degree programme.
