What to wear

All graduands are expected to wear academic dress. The requirements are given below. Gown and hood hire can be arranged with Ede & Ravenscroft

Please note that on Ede & Ravenscroft's website the M.A. (Master of Arts) and M.Theol. (Master of Theology) comes under 'Masters Degrees' and not under 'Bachelor's/1st Degrees'.

Academic costume

Graduation gownsAt graduation and other ceremonies formal dress is worn, as follows:-

Women: Dark skirt or trousers, white shirt/blouse/ dark shoes.

Men: Dark lounge suit or kilt, white shirt, white bow tie and dark shoes.

(please note that jeans, trainers or other casual clothing are NOT permitted; you may be excluded from the ceremony if you are not wearing appropriate academic dress)

Graduands Gowns (apart from Research Students Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) and M.D. (Doctor of Medicine))

Wear the black graduate's gown and carry the hood proper to the degree to be conferred.

Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) students only will wear the blue gown NOT the black graduate's gown.

M.D. (Doctor of Medicine) students only will wear the red gown not the black graduate's gown.

Officers and graduates

Wear the gown and hood and carry or wear the cap appropriate to the office or degree held.

Gowns

Chancellor: Black brocaded silk gown and long closed sleeves and square collar trimmed with gold lace and gold frogs.

Vice-Chancellor: Black brocaded silk gown with long closed sleeves and square collar, trimmed with silver lace and silver frogs.

Rector: Purple-blue corded silk gown with full sleeves, tippet, and hood, faced and lined with maroon silk and with a maroon velvet collar.

Principal and members of the Principal's Office:  Purple corded silk gown with full sleeves, faced with purple velvet.

Heads of Colleges: Black silk gown with long closed sleeves, with a silk collar of the colour appropriate to the College: red, (United College), purple, (St Mary's College), white, (St Leonard's College).

Note:- with the above gowns degree hoods are not worn.

Chancellor's Assessor: Black silk gown with long closed sleeves, each ornamented with two gold frogs.

Rector's Assessor: Purple-blue silk gown with long open sleeves and maroon velvet collar.

Senior Governor: Black cloth with long closed sleeves, each ornamented with one silver frog.

Deans: A silk gown of the colour of the hood of the principal degree of the Faculty, with square collar facings of the colour of the lining of that hood.

Doctors:

Undress - For honorary Doctors, a black silk cassock with buttons of the colour of the appropriate degree hood and with full sleeves.  For ordinary Doctors, the ordinary graduate's gown.

Full-Dress - A silk gown of the colour of the appropriate degree hood.  In the case of Doctors other than Doctor of Philosophy they may also wear if desired a black silk cassock with buttons and cincture of the colour of the appropriate degree hood.

Graduates other than Doctors: Black stuff or silk gown with long closed sleeves.

Note:- with the above gowns degree hoods are worn.

Hoods

The hoods of graduates in all Faculties are after the pattern of those of the University of Cambridge as most nearly resembling the form of the hood on the Rector's robe.

  • Master of Arts (M.A.): Black silk with cherry silk lining.
  • Master of Letters (M.Litt.): Black silk lined with saffron yellow silk or cloth.
  • Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.): Saffron yellow silk lined with ermine or white satin.
  • Doctor of Music (Mus.D.): Sky blue silk or cloth lined with ermine or white satin.
  • Doctor of Laws (LL.D.): Pimento silk or cloth lined with ermine or white satin.
  • Master of Theology (M. Theol.): Black silk lined with violet silk or cloth.
  • Bachelor of Divinity (B.D.): Violet silk or cloth bordered with white fur.
  • Doctor of Divinity (D.D.): Violet silk or cloth lined with ermine or white satin.
  • Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.): Purple-lilac silk or cloth bordered with white fur.
  • Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.): Peacock Blue silk or cloth bordered with white fur.
  • Doctor of Medicine (M.D.): Medici Crimson. Darker version of the B.Sc. hood with an ivory white lining.
  • Master in Science (M.Sci.): Black Silk with 3" purple-lilac silk or cloth border.
  • Master in Chemistry (M.Chem.): Black Silk with 3" purple-lilac silk or cloth border.
  • Master in Engineering: (M.Eng.): Peacock Blue silk or cloth.
  • Master in Gelogy (M.Geol.): Black Silk with 3" purple-lilac silk or cloth border.
  • Master in Maths (M.Maths.): Black Silk with 3" purple-lilac silk or cloth border.
  • Master in Physics (M.Phys.): Black Silk with 3" purple-lilac silk or cloth border.
  • Master of Science (M.Sc.): Black silk lined with purple-lilac silk or cloth.
  • Doctor of Science (D.Sc.): Purple-lilac silk or cloth lined with ermine or white satin.
  • Master of Research (M.Res.): Black silk lined with spectrum blue.
  • Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.): Black silk lined with gold silk or cloth.
  • Doctor of Engineering (D.Eng.): Midnight Blue silk lined with white satin.
  • Doctor of Languages (D.Lang.): Green silk lined with white satin.
  • Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.): Blue silk (B.C.C. 86 - Spectrum Blue) lined with white satin.
  • Graduate Diploma: Black silk with 3" spectrum blue silk or cloth border.

Caps

Chancellor: Black velvet trencher cap trimmed with gold lace and with a gold tassel.
 
Vice-Chancellor and Principal: Black velvet trencher cap trimmed with silver lace and with a silver tassel.

Graduates in academic dressChancellor's Assessor and Rector's Assessor: Black velvet trencher cap with black tassel.

Senior Governor: Black velvet mortarboard with a silver tassel.

Rector: Black velvet cap with a maroon tassel.
