St Andrews to honour golfing greats
Three of the world's greatest golfers are to be honoured by the University of St Andrews on the eve of the 139th Open Championship.
Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson and Padraig Harrington will be awarded Honorary Degrees by the University in a public ceremony in the town's Younger Hall on Tuesday 13 July 2010 at 3pm.
The trio has won 18 major championships, including nine British Open titles, over the course of the last half century.
The University will award each of them the degree of Doctor of Laws honoris causa in recognition of their achievements and outstanding contributions to the game of golf.
Honours will also be awarded to local St Andrews golf legend Jim Farmer and South African business leader Johann Rupert, head of the Swiss-based luxury group Richemont whose brands include Cartier, Chloe and Dunhill. Rupert’s honorary degree will recognise his long term support of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
The awards ceremony - a traditional feature of Open Week in St Andrews - will take place at 3pm on 13 July in the University's graduation venue at Younger Hall in North Street, St Andrews. The degrees will be conferred by University Chancellor Sir Menzies Campbell.
Immediately after the ceremony, traffic will be stopped in North Street and the Honorary Graduates will process down the street to St Salvator’s Quad, led by a piper and the University mace-bearers.
How can I see the ceremony?
The ceremony is open to the public and tickets are free. It has proved enormously popular however and the 1,000 seats in Younger Hall are at present fully subscribed by guests and members of the public.
It is possible that some tickets may become available closer to the ceremony itself due to late cancellations.
Any spare tickets will be allocated on a first come first served basis strictly between 2pm and 2.30pm on Tuesday 13 July from our ticket allocation point at our Development Office, Crawford Building, 91 North Street, St Andrews.
You are very welcome to check with us by visiting our Development Office from 2pm on 13 July. Any spare tickets will only be available to personal callers; unfortunately it is not possible for us to hold standby lists or to take reservations by telephone or email.

If you have already been advised that you have a ticket, you will be able to collect your ticket from our Development Office, Crawford Building, 91 North Street, from 9.30am on Monday 12 July.
