Staff

Our department is transnational in its focus and international in its composition. This diversity is reflected in the range and vibrancy of our scholarship, with interests including (but not limited to): world cinemas (Russian, Eastern European, Indian, Chinese, South Korean, British/Scottish, Italian), Deleuze and contemporary film theory, Hollywood film and history, film festivals and exhibition, queer cinema, silent cinema and social advocacy film and video.

Our staff have authored or edited some twenty books including Film Nation: Hollywood Looks at U.S. History (Robert Burgoyne), Cinema of the Other Europe: The Industry and Artistry of East Central European Film (Dina Iordanova), Beauty and the Beast: Italianness in British Cinema (Elisabetta Girelli), Deleuze and World Cinemas (David Martin-Jones), and Moving Color: Early Film, Mass Culture, Modernism (Joshua Yumibe).

We have an excellent record of funding and research projects with grants from AHRB for research into Balkan Cinema, Leverhulme Trust for research into Film Festivals and also into colour cinema in the 1920s, and the Russell Trust to bring art films to our local cinema.

Formed in 2004, we are a small but rapidly expanding department. This year saw the appointment of two new lecturers (Dr Dennis Hanlon and Dr Brian Jacobson) and two new post-doctoral positions (Dr Stefanie Van de Peer and Dr Bregt Lameris).
