Dr Ruby Cheung at the 'Rethinking Chinese Film Industry: New Methods, New Histories' Conference

The 'Rethinking Chinese Film Industry: New Methods, New Histories' conference held on 8-9 October 2010 and organised by Hong Kong Baptist University brought scholarly and critical attention to the matters of pre-war Chinese-language film industries. It had two aims: to expand the existing scope of industry research and to explore new methodological approaches. It featured experts from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, the UK and USA.

Asian Research Trip

In October Prof. Dina Iordanova is travelling to Hong Kong and Singapore for research work, talks, and workshops related to the Dynamics of World Cinema project. The trip will also serve as a pre-publicity tour for her new book, Film Festivals and East Asia (forthcoming January 2011). She will also hold meetings with the members of the St. Andrews Alumni Club in Hong Kong and with the director of Hong Kong University Press.

Faculty Update: David Martin-Jones

This summer I was lucky enough to be invited back to the Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Brazil. As was the case in 2007 I spent a week working as a Visiting Professor with masters and doctoral students in the Laboratory of Scientific Journalism. I taught material drawn from my forthcoming monograph, Deleuze and World Cinemas (Continuum) which is currently in press and due out in February, and especially enjoyed discussing how Deleuze’s ideas are applicable to Brazilian films.

Dr Ruby Cheung has been invited to give a paper at the 'Rethinking Chinese Film Industry: New Methods, New Histories' conference to be held on 8-9 October in Hong Kong at Hong Kong Baptist University.
