War and Cinema Symposium
Sat 17th March 2012 09:30 to 18:00
Lawson Room, Kennedy Hall: St Andrews
The war film is one of the great modes of cinematic expression, with outstanding examples of the genre stretching from the early silent period to the contemporary era. Recent critical work has opened new perspectives on the role of the war film in 20th and 21st century culture.
The symposium will explore four topics of contemporary critical interest:
The logistics of perception - the historical and theoretical connections between advances in cinematic technique and optical weaponry.
War and the body - the war film as "body genre."
Generational memory and film - the shaping and framing of memory in film.
"Postheroic war" - representing war in the 21st century.
Free and Open to the Public: Registration Required (places are limited).
