CFS Talk: Sarah Street, Colour Transformations in Wartime Britain

This paper concentrates on the wartime years in Britain, when the advancement of colour was threatened by scarcity, disruptions and, on the part of some, scepticism as to its necessity. This case study demonstrates how cultural and material contexts impact on aesthetics and influence how technology works.

CFS Talk: Joshua Yumibe, Into and Out of the Screen: The Immersive Colours of Silent Cinema

This paper examines the various ways in which colour was used during silent cinema to create an immersive colour space for the embodied spectator. Drawing on Walter Benjamin's notion of Spielraum ("play space") to demarcate the potentials of cinematic immersion, three primary examples will be discussed.
