Tue 22nd February 2011 17:15 to 19:00
Firmly embedded in the culture and commerce of Hollywood, the Academy Awards are positioned within the dialectic of artistic status vs. the box office. This talk will examine how the Oscars position film actors between twin value systems of artistic prestige and box office profit, and will explore the transferability of symbolic into economic capital.
Tue 8th February 2011 17:15 to 19:00
This talk will use the recent flourishing of independent film production in Naples, Italy as a case study to explore the viability of regional filmmaking practices in contemporary European cinema. It will also consider the institutional and socio-cultural role played by such regional cinema in relation to broader national and transnational processes. (Please note that Yun-hua Chen will not be able to present the paper originally scheduled for this date. We hope to feature her presentation in the Autumn semester.)
