Cinema and Cultural Engagement: Bamako (Abderrahmane Sissako, 2007)
Set in the courtyard of a house in Bamako, the capital of Mali, this film juxtaposes the very personal story of two people on the verge of a breakup with very public proceedings. Here, African civil society leaders take action against the Word Bank and the IMF, while daily life continues as always. Featuring a short Western starring Danny Glover and Elia Suleiman, this is a film full of surprises.

Dr Núria Triana Toribio will speak on the initiative, 'Cine en Construccion': Strategies for financing Latin American Cinema in Cooperation with Europe. In the paper she investigates the contradictions in the project and the role of film festivals in counteracting some of the forces of globalisation.
