As the hub of research being done in Film in St Andrews, The Centre for Film Studies organises conferences, workshops, film festivals, screenings with visiting directors as well as regular fortnightly research seminars with guest speakers from international and national locations.
These events attract scholars and students from across the University, and beyond. Anyone is welcome to attend our events, and we are also interested in receiving requests from established or visiting scholars to host an event, festival or lecture on any topic related to film studies.
We have hosted academics such as Robert Rosenstone, Mette Hjort, and Philip Schlesinger, film critics like Jonathan Rosenbaum, and directors such as Zelimir Zilnik and Marian Crisan, not to mention African, French and Italian film festivals.
For the Academic Year 2016-2017, we have a host of events, including our speaker series, which begins with Professor Richard Dyer on the 27th September, and continuing with Dr Lucy Bolton, Professor Jackie Stacey, and Dr Anuja Jain; the IGCCC Workshop ‘Rip Off’ or Resourceful Creativity? Innovation over Imitation in Popular Cinema Beyond the West; and Richard Dyer’s screening series, Love! Music! Celebrity! Murder!
