School of English Seminar Series 2012/13 - Birdsong: Translation and Transition in Old and New English Poetry

DescriptionThis paper will explore ways of reading contemporary English-language poetry alongside Old English poetry, using 3 poems from Elaine Feinstein's Cities (2011) and the Old English poem, The Phoenix, from the late tenth-century poetic anthology, The Exeter Book. Past and present poetry is connected in this particular instance by a shared interest in birds, migration and translation, while my project overall explores questions of cultural location and poetic identity.
