Applicants invited for Two Fleeman Fellowships 2012-2013
We are pleased to announce that the School of English, University of St Andrews, invites applications for two awards, of up to £10,000 each, to support visiting postdoctoral scholars wishing to carry out research in eighteenth-century literature at St Andrews during the academic year 2012-2013.
The Fleeman Fellowship scheme was made possible by a generous bequest from the estate of distinguished Samuel Johnson scholar, the late J. D. Fleeman. Fleeman also gifted the riches of his Samuel Johnson collection to the University, and the Library’s holdings are particularly strong in this area. St Andrews University Library was a copyright deposit library from 1710 to 1836.
Fellows will work at St Andrews for a period to be mutually agreed, but not less than six weeks, between September 2012 and August 2013. Awards are intended to cover Fellows’ travel, accommodation and living expenses while in St Andrews. Fellows will each be invited to present a paper on their research to a School seminar.
Applicants for the Fleeman Fellowship should send a CV (including the names of two referees), a research proposal and covering letter to pgeng@st-andrews.ac.uk by 1st of March 2012. Applicants should also ask one of their referees to send a reference to the same address by that date. Second referees will only be contacted if the first reference does not arrive. Research proposals are particularly welcome from scholars working on Samuel Johnson, but the awards are open to researchers working on any aspect of eighteenth-century literary culture. The School hopes to notify applicants of the outcome by the beginning of April 2012.
Please direct any queries about the Fellowship to Chris Jones at csj2@st-andrews.ac.uk.
