The MLitt in Mediaeval English is an intensive one-year taught programme culminating in a 15,000-word dissertation. Students study the full range of medieval literature in English, c.800-1500. Compulsory modules in Old English and Middle English are combined with specialist compulsory training in paleography, codicology and medieval literary theory to ensure that students emerge fully equipped to carry out further research in any area of mediaeval English literature, whether Old or Middle, English or Scottish. For more details on the MLitt structure and syllabus see the School's Mediaeval English pages. Students who successfully complete the MLitt coursework but do not write a dissertation may be awarded the Postgraduate Diploma.
The two-year MPhil consists of the complete MLitt in Mediaeval English taught course in the first year followed by a second year of writing up a 40,000-word dissertation. Note that it is possible to register for the MLitt and transfer to MPhil status (subject to approval) part-way through the first year, and vice-versa.
There is also an interdisciplinary MLitt in Mediaeval Studies offered through the St Andrews Institute of Mediaeval Studies (SAIMS), which includes the opportunity to study some mediaeval English literature.
