Research Programmes: MPhil and PhD

The School provides supervision for the research degrees of MPhil and PhD. The MPhil normally requires two years of study including a one-year taught course from the MLitt programme, followed by a second year of research and a thesis of not more than 40,000 words. Applicants who already hold a suitable Masters or MLitt degree may be eligible for admittance directly to the second year of an MPhil degree. Candidates for the PhD undertake at least three years of study and submit a thesis of not more than 80,000 words.

At any one time, the School of English has a lively community of over 60 Current postgraduates who have a Facilities available to them.

The School makes every effort to help its postgraduates to develop their academic careers. Financial support is available for travel to conferences and external research facilities. We are one of only two universities outside the USA in the Folger Institute consortium, and several of our postgraduates have attended events there with the financial support available to the consortium's members. Our postgraduates are also encouraged to organise and host conferences here at St Andrews, making use of our new video-conferencing facilities where relevant.

Postgraduates may act as research assistants to individual members of staff, and research postgraduates in their second year or above may be invited to work as Teaching Assistants.
